Overview

Angostura lies on the coastal plain of north-central Sinaloa, among the municipalities of Guasave, Salvador Alvarado, Mocorito and Navolato, with a coastline on the Gulf of California.

Irrigated agriculture and small-scale coastal fishing anchor the municipal economy; Bahía Santa María, shared with Navolato, sustains active fishing and aquaculture.

History

Angostura's territory was part of the Distrito de Mocorito until 1916. That December, as part of governor Ángel Flores's abolition of the district prefectures, the state congress erected Angostura as a free municipality, by decree of 7 December, with its seat at the locality of Angostura.

The seat was elevated from Villa to Ciudad by Decreto No. 314, of 27 June 1983.

Geography

The municipality borders Guasave, Salvador Alvarado, Mocorito and Navolato, with a coastline on the Gulf of California.

Bahía Santa María, on its coast, is recognized by the Comisión Nacional para el Conocimiento y Uso de la Biodiversidad (CONABIO) as one of Mexico's 32 priority wetlands; since 2003 the municipalities of Angostura and Navolato have maintained a joint management program for its conservation.
