Overview

Concordia spans the foothills of the Sierra Madre Occidental, in southern Sinaloa, southeast of Mazatlán. Its seat keeps a historic center of colonial architecture.

Handcrafted wooden furniture-making, with more than a century of tradition, is one of the municipality's distinctive activities.

History

Per municipal sources, Spanish captain Francisco de Ibarra founded the Villa de San Sebastián in 1565, the origin of Concordia's present-day seat.

In 1828, based on Sinaloa's first political constitution, the villa took the name Concordia; a local tradition, not documented at the primary-source level, associates this with the reconciliation of two regional Masonic lodges.

The municipality of Concordia was constituted as a free municipality as part of Sinaloa's 1915-1917 municipal reform; an exact decree date for its individual creation has not been independently verified.

Geography

The municipality lies in the foothills of the Sierra Madre Occidental, in southern Sinaloa, southeast of Mazatlán, with territory combining sierra areas and dry-tropical lowlands.
