Overview
Elota lies on the coastal plain of south-central Sinaloa, among the municipalities of Cosalá, San Ignacio, Mazatlán and Navolato, with roughly 45 kilometers of coastline on the Gulf of California, where the bays of Ceuta and Tempehuya and beaches such as Celestino Gazca and Rosendo Nieblas are formed.
Irrigated agriculture, especially vegetable growing, and small-scale coastal fishing anchor the municipal economy; coastal tourism has grown steadily in recent decades.
History
The municipality of Elota was erected as a free municipality by Decree No. 29, of 3 April 1917, issued under governor Ángel Flores, with its seat at the then-town of Elota.
On 8 May 1927, after the corresponding decree was published in the state's official gazette the day before, the municipal government moved to La Cruz, which by then had grown past 2,000 inhabitants against Elota's roughly 900; the new seat's first council session was held on 9 May 1927. Elota remained as a sindicatura of the municipality.
Geography
The municipality borders Cosalá, San Ignacio, Mazatlán and Navolato, with about 45 kilometers of coastline on the Gulf of California, where the bays of Ceuta and Tempehuya form.
A sea-turtle protection camp has operated on the coast since 1976, on the beaches where these species nest.
