Overview
Escuinapa lies on the coastal plain of Sinaloa's far south, amid the estuaries and wetlands that give the region its name. It is the state's southernmost municipality.
Shrimp fishing is one of the municipality's distinctive economic activities: it gave rise to the tamal known as "tamales barbones," made with whole shrimp and associated with the coast's shrimping families. Irrigated agriculture complements the municipal economy.
History
The territory of present-day Escuinapa was inhabited by descendants of peoples of Mexica origin, who made use of the estuaries' salt, hunting and fishing; per the municipal government, the original settlement, called Ahuchén, gave rise in turn to Pueblo Viejo and Izquinapa, the latter documented around 1602 with about 20 residents. In the colonial era, the territory was part of the jurisdiction of San Sebastián.
By Decree No. 21, of 7 September 1915, issued by provisional governor Manuel Rodríguez Gutiérrez, the villa of Escuinapa was elevated to city rank under the name Escuinapa de Hidalgo, honoring Miguel Hidalgo.
