Overview

Juan José Ríos lies on the farming plain of northern Sinaloa, among the municipalities of Guasave, Ahome, El Fuerte and Sinaloa, from which its territory was split off. It is divided into four sindicaturas: the Central one, seated in the city of Juan José Ríos, and those of Bachoco, El Cerro Cabezán and Tres Garantías.

Its economy is predominantly agricultural, heir to the irrigated-farming character of the Río Sinaloa and Río Fuerte valleys.

History

Before 2021, the territory that now forms the municipality of Juan José Ríos was split among the municipalities of Guasave — which contributed the Sindicatura de Juan José Ríos and the locality of El Cerro Cabezán —, Ahome — which contributed a portion of the city of Juan José Ríos itself and the localities of Bachoco II and Ejido Cerro Cabezán —, El Fuerte — which contributed the localities of Agua de las Arenas and Tres Garantías — and Sinaloa — which contributed the locality of El Amapal.

The state congress approved the new municipality's creation through Decreto No. 598 on 5 March 2021; the corresponding declaratoria was issued on 19 March of that year, and the decree was published in the Periódico Oficial "El Estado de Sinaloa" on 22 March 2021. The new municipal government, Sinaloa's twentieth, took office on 1 November 2024, after a period of administrative transition.

Geography

The municipality borders Guasave to the south and Ahome, El Fuerte and Sinaloa to the north, with a coastline on the Gulf of California; it keeps the extent formerly held by the sindicaturas and localities split off from those four municipalities.

It is divided politically and administratively into four sindicaturas: the Central one (seated in the city of Juan José Ríos), Bachoco, El Cerro Cabezán and Tres Garantías.
