Overview

Navolato lies on the coastal plain of central Sinaloa, west of Culiacán, between the farming valley of the Río Culiacán and the coast of the Gulf of California.

Its economy rests mainly on irrigated agriculture; sugarcane cultivation, present in the region since the nineteenth century, is one of the distinctive features of the municipality's farm output.

History

The land the municipality of Navolato now occupies was part of the municipality of Culiacán until 1982. The state congress, through Decreto No. 212, created Sinaloa's eighteenth municipality, named "Navolato", from territory split off Culiacán.

The new seat was the locality of Navolato, whose nineteenth-century growth was tied to the region's cane-farming development, around the old Ingenio La Primavera.

Geography

The municipality lies on the coastal plain of central Sinaloa, with a coastline on the Gulf of California.

The municipal territory is predominantly agricultural, largely part of the Río Culiacán valley irrigation district.
