Overview

Salvador Alvarado occupies a small farming plain in north-central Sinaloa, between the municipalities of Guasave, Sinaloa, Mocorito and Angostura. Its economy rests on irrigated agriculture and on the commerce and services concentrated in Guamúchil, its seat.

The municipality is named for General Salvador Alvarado Rubio, a revolutionary military figure and governor born in Culiacán in 1880, who drove labour and social reforms that influenced the 1917 Constitution.

History

The land the municipality now occupies was part of the municipality of Mocorito until 1962. The state congress, through Decreto No. 280 — published on 6 March 1962, per INEGI's historical municipal record — created Sinaloa's seventeenth municipality, named "Salvador Alvarado", from the territory then held by the sindicatura of Guamúchil.

The new municipal government took office on 1 January 1963, with Guamúchil as its seat. The city had grown since the early twentieth century around the railroad station, opened on 1 August 1908.

Geography

The municipality lies on the coastal plain of north-central Sinaloa; it is, by area, the smallest of the state's eighteen municipalities.

Its territory is a flat irrigated farming plain, with no significant high ground, part of the Río Sinaloa valley irrigation district.
