Known as "La Alondra de México" ("The Lark of Mexico"), she became one of the distinctive voices of ranchera and norteña music, with songs including "Besos y copas," "San Juan del Río," "Amor que muere" and "Una sola caída" that reached wide audiences in Mexico and the United States.

In 1985 she was involved in a car accident, and later health problems drew her away from performing in the final stage of her life. She died on 19 June 2016 in San Diego, California, at the age of 71.
