Biography

Julio César Chávez González was born on 12 July 1962 in Ciudad Obregón, Sonora. When he was about four years old, his family returned to Sinaloa, settling first in Mazatlán and then in Culiacán, where Chávez grew up and began boxing under the influence of his brothers.

He made his professional boxing debut on 2 May 1980. Over a twenty-five-year career he won world titles in three weight divisions — super featherweight, lightweight and super lightweight — and went undefeated for an extended period before his first loss, to Frankie Randall in 1994, a title he later reclaimed in the rematch.

He retired in 2005 with a professional record of 107 wins, 6 losses and 2 draws, most of them by knockout. In 1993 he headlined the first boxing match to fill Estadio Azteca, drawing more than 130,000 spectators. In 2011 he was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame.
