Overview
The Teatro Ángela Peralta occupies a building constructed between 1869 and 1874 at the initiative of the merchant Manuel Rubio, designed by the engineer Andrés Librado Tapia. It opened in mid-February 1874 as Teatro Rubio and, together with the neighboring Plazuela Machado, forms part of Mazatlán's historic core; for much of its history it also served as a Carnival ballroom.
Over the twentieth century the building took on very different uses — a movie house, a boxing arena, a dance hall — before falling into considerable disrepair. A restoration carried out between 1987 and 1992 restored its function as a theater, and the venue reopened on October 23, 1992. Today it hosts theater, opera, dance, film screenings and the Mazatlán Cultural Festival, along with official events.
History
The theater took its current name in honor of the Mexican soprano Ángela Peralta, who arrived in Mazatlán in 1883 with her Italian opera company in the middle of a yellow fever epidemic; several members of the company died of the disease, and Peralta herself died in the port on August 30 of that year, before the scheduled performances could take place. The building was declared a National Historical Monument in 1990.
